PRACTICAL RAIL GUIDE

Swiss Travel Pass: a practical 4-day itinerary

Zurich → Lucerne → Interlaken → Bern → Zurich: a four-day planning example with three hotel nights, a scenic rail journey and room to change plans. This is not a bookable package.

Sources checked: 30 October 2026

Before choosing four days

Plan one night in Lucerne and two in Interlaken. The continuous pass covers four consecutive calendar travel days, not 96 hours from your first train. A late arrival still uses the first date. Check the validity start and end printed on your ticket and the official conditions; do not assume that a fifth-day airport trip is included. If you arrive the evening before, price that transfer separately. Choose dates around your actual journeys, not the number of hotel nights.

Validity: 00:00 on day 1 to 05:00 after day 4 (Swiss local time). T673 §0.5.3 (2026)

Day 1: arrive and sleep in Lucerne

Search Zürich Flughafen → Luzern in the SBB timetable; if you begin in the city, search Zürich HB → Luzern instead. Use the connection shown for your date, including any changes. Leave arrival-day slack for immigration, luggage and delays. After hotel check-in, choose a short old-town and lakeside walk rather than a mountain excursion. Night 1: Lucerne.

Day 2: cross to Interlaken

Search Luzern → Interlaken Ost via the Luzern–Interlaken Express route. Zentralbahn operates this scenic connection; check engineering notices, the timetable and any optional reservation separately. Keep the afternoon for checking in and walking around Interlaken. Match your hotel to its actual nearest station: Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost are different stops. Night 2: Interlaken.

Day 3: a flexible Thun day

Search Interlaken Ost → Thun and Thun → Interlaken Ost for a return rail outing without moving hotels. Explore the town at your own pace. A lake cruise is optional, not an assumed connection: check the exact sailing, season, pier and pass validity before replacing a train leg. If you prefer a rest day, stay in Interlaken and remove these fares from your comparison. Night 3: Interlaken.

Day 4: Bern, then Zurich

Search Interlaken Ost → Bern, then Bern → Zürich HB or Zürich Flughafen. A Bern stop is optional: check luggage storage availability and allow time for collecting bags. For a flight, work backwards from the airline’s airport arrival requirement and add disruption margin. Skip Bern if the departure is early or the connection is tight; stay near Zurich the night before instead and recalculate the plan.

Coverage, weather and extra costs

Verify every chosen rail, local bus and boat segment on the current validity map; a pass does not reserve seats. Accommodation, meals and luggage storage are separate. Mountain excursions are not built into this route: add the exact ascent/return ticket, pass discount if applicable, reservation and supplement as separate costs. In poor weather, replace an optional mountain or boat outing with a town visit or museum after checking opening hours and admission. Do not count a museum as free without checking participation.

Copy this comparison worksheet

Copy these lines into your notes and fill in current quotes for the same dates, passengers and class. Single-ticket total = day 1 ___ + day 2 ___ + day 3 return ___ + day 4 legs ___ + local transport ___ + chosen extras ___. Pass total = four-day pass ___ + uncovered transfers ___ + reservations/supplements ___ + chosen extras after valid discounts ___. Keep hotels and meals outside both totals or add them equally. Record ticket flexibility and cancellation rules next to each quote; a cheaper restricted ticket is not equivalent to flexible travel.

Decide before booking

Use the pass only if it matches the journeys you will really make and the flexibility you value. A quiet day or late arrival can weaken the case; compare individual tickets and, if relevant, the Swiss Half Fare Card. Check residency eligibility, traveller details, class, dates and refund terms before payment.
