Read your journey as separate ticket components
A pass is a transport entitlement, not an all-inclusive holiday package. For each journey write down four possible charges: the underlying transport fare, a seat reservation, a service or premium-class supplement, and optional food or experiences. A covered train can still have a payable reservation. A discounted mountain route still needs a ticket. An uncovered service needs its own fare. Do not treat these three situations as equivalent.
Check the official validity map, segment by segment
Start from SBB’s Swiss Travel Pass page and open its area-of-validity map. Find the exact stations and operator, then read the legend: do not infer coverage merely because a line appears on the map. Break an excursion into the approach train, mountain railway or cable car, and any onward connection. Record whether each segment is included, reduced or outside validity, and check the operator’s current passholder fare when a reduction applies. Rigi, Stanserhorn and Stoos are listed by SBB as included mountain journeys; that does not make every mountain excursion free. Check the chosen access route and operating dates too.
Glacier Express: covered fare, separate compulsory reservation
A valid Swiss Travel Pass covers the underlying Glacier Express journey in the corresponding class, but the compulsory seat reservation costs extra. Check actual seats and the operating calendar before choosing fixed pass dates. Select the existing-pass or reservation-only option rather than buying a second full transport ticket. First-class travel requires the corresponding transport entitlement; Excellence Class also has its own reservation supplement. A second-class pass plus an expensive seat reservation is not, by itself, a first-class ticket. Keep the pass and reservation confirmation together.
Bernina: distinguish panoramic carriages from regional trains
Bernina Express panoramic carriages require a paid reservation in addition to a valid transport ticket or pass. If your priority is the railway landscape rather than the branded carriage, compare ordinary regional connections on the relevant Bernina route. These are a different travel plan: check changes, stops and the timetable rather than assuming the same through train. Ordinary regional trains do not require the Bernina Express panoramic reservation. Verify the exact service shown in your search, especially when a train includes different carriage types. Treat any onward journey beyond your pass’s coverage as a separate ticket check.
GoldenPass Express: reservation and Prestige are different decisions
For GoldenPass Express between Montreux and Interlaken Ost, a valid Swiss Travel Pass can provide the underlying transport entitlement. Seat reservations in first and second class are recommended, not the same as a compulsory Glacier Express reservation. Prestige has its own compulsory reservation and requires first-class transport entitlement. Compare the exact class and reservation conditions in the operator’s booking flow. Do not label every panoramic journey as “reservation included”, or every premium seating product as a free pass upgrade.

Use a worksheet instead of an invented savings estimate
Example planning worksheet, not a priced itinerary: row 1, an intercity journey such as Zürich–Lucerne: record the route, date, class and map result; row 2, your precise mountain ascent and descent: record each operator and passholder ticket; row 3, your selected Glacier Express segment: record covered transport and the separate reservation quote; row 4, a Bernina day: compare the chosen panoramic service with a regional itinerary; row 5, GoldenPass Express: record standard or Prestige class and its reservation requirement. For every row add the no-pass fare for the same journey, cancellation rules, and the date you checked. Leave unknown amounts blank, not zero. Total the pass price plus uncovered tickets, reduced mountain tickets, reservations and upgrades; compare it with a realistic no-pass itinerary using the same comfort and flexibility.

Before paying: resolve the expensive unknowns
Confirm passenger eligibility, travel dates, class and the pass variant. On Flex, check that the day is activated for the benefit you intend to use; SBB states that its Flex mountain discounts apply only on activated travel days. Check mountain operating dates, weather-dependent plans and the final return connection. Read cancellation terms separately for the pass, the reservation and the excursion: changing one does not automatically change the others. If the essential scenic train has no suitable seats, revise the itinerary before buying a pass around it. A pass may still suit a multi-stop trip, but it is not automatically the cheapest choice.
