What to compare
Search the night train before committing to non-refundable hotels or feeder tickets. Compare an alternative date if the required cabin is unavailable. Record the arrival date as well as the departure date; an overnight journey crosses midnight, and calendar mistakes can break an onward booking.
Choose accommodation, not just a ticket
A seat, a couchette and a sleeping-car berth are different products. A berth in a shared compartment does not mean exclusive use of the cabin. Check occupancy, whether other passengers may join, washroom arrangements, bedding and access to upper bunks. If travelling with children or needing step-free access, confirm suitable accommodation before payment rather than relying on a generic cabin photograph.
Check the actual operator and date
Use Nightjet, SNCF INTERCITÉS de nuit or Trenitalia Intercity Notte to check their own departures. Routes, operating days, rolling stock and booking openings can change. Search the exact overnight date and both station names; a journey shown by a general planner may involve a daytime connection, a different operator or no reservable sleeping accommodation.
Book the whole journey deliberately
Compare an ordinary ticket with the applicable pass-holder offer, including the berth or reservation supplement. A rail pass alone is not a reserved bed. If your group needs one compartment, verify the actual booking allocation or select an explicit private-compartment product; buying several individual berths does not prove they are together.
Prepare for the night
Pack essential medication, toiletries, drinking water, earplugs and valuables in a small accessible bag. Confirm meal inclusions rather than assuming a restaurant car. Plan what to do after an early arrival and avoid a tight onward connection that would make the whole trip fragile. Compare the full overnight cost against a daytime train plus accommodation.
What to compare
Compare the same travel date, stations, passengers and accommodation. The cheapest result can become poor value once baggage, reservations, local transfers or restrictive changes are included. Save the complete offer and its conditions, not just the headline price.
Before you pay
Check the departure and arrival station names carefully. A city can have several stations, and a transfer across town needs more time than a change on adjacent platforms. There is no safe universal connection time: allow for luggage, children, access needs and the consequences of missing the next departure.
Connections and travel day
Keep your ticket, any separate reservation and required identity documents accessible offline. Recheck the operator’s travel information shortly before departure. If a disruption occurs, follow instructions for your actual booking and keep notifications and receipts; voluntary changes and disruption arrangements are different processes.
A practical final check
Before purchasing, write down the final cost, what is included, the change or cancellation deadline, and where help will come from. If an important condition is unclear, ask the seller before committing. A timetable entry is not a guarantee that a seat, berth or particular onboard facility is available.
