PRACTICAL RAIL GUIDE

Interrail Global Pass: travel days, reservations and real trip costs

Plan the journeys first, then choose the pass. A Berlin–Prague–Vienna–Budapest example shows how four travel days can fit into a longer holiday, and what still costs extra.

Start with your route, not a country count

The Global Pass covers participating rail networks across 33 countries, not every train or every form of public transport. List each station-to-station journey and check the operator, service and pass validity. A trip concentrated in one country also deserves a comparison with individual tickets or a One Country Pass. Since 9 September 2026, Interrail is the shared brand for European and non-European residents; do not rely on old advice that excludes the latter.

Count travel dates, not hotel nights

A Flexi Pass provides a set number of travel days within a longer validity period. Several eligible trains taken on the same travel day do not each consume another day. A day spent exploring a city without using the pass does not use a Flexi day. A Continuous Pass instead runs through consecutive dates, including days when you stay put. Count all transfer dates, return journeys and optional excursions before comparing the currently offered durations.

Travel-day rules

An illustrative four-day, four-country plan

Day 1: Berlin → Prague. Days 2–3: stay in Prague. Day 4: Prague → Vienna. Days 5–6: stay in Vienna. Day 7: Vienna → Budapest. Days 8–9: stay in Budapest. Day 10: Budapest → Vienna. This uses four planned rail dates over ten calendar days, assuming the selected trains are covered and each journey is completed as planned. Vienna is the endpoint, not an included return to Berlin. Add a fifth rail date if you need another pass-covered journey home; do not buy four days merely because the route contains four cities.

Check the bottleneck before buying

Search the actual dates and trains, especially the cross-border legs, before committing to accommodation. A pass is not a seat reservation. Many high-speed trains and night trains require a separate reservation; fees, availability and booking channels vary. For this example, verify each selected service rather than assuming the same rule applies to all trains between two cities. If a preferred departure is unavailable, compare a different time, a slower route or a separate ticket. Saving a reservation fee may mean extra changes and a longer day.

Seat reservations

Home-country limits and overnight trains

If you live in a country in the pass network, the Global Pass normally permits one outbound and one inbound journey in your country of residence, within travel days—not unlimited domestic travel or two extra free days. Even transit can use this allowance. For a night train boarded before midnight with no change after midnight, only the departure travel day is needed, but arrival must remain within overall pass validity. A new train after midnight needs another travel day. Our daytime example avoids this complication; confirm the rules before substituting a sleeper.

Compare the complete transport bill

Pass option = pass price + reservations + required supplements + uncovered journeys + local transport not included. Individual-ticket option = every chosen rail ticket + its required extras + the same local transport. Use matching dates, passengers, class and refund conditions. Record Berlin–Prague ___; Prague–Vienna ___; Vienna–Budapest ___; Budapest–Vienna ___; airport/home transfer ___; extras ___. Keep hotel and meal costs equal in both comparisons. A cheap fixed train ticket is not equivalent to a flexible fare, and an unused pass day is not a saving.

Choose fewer days—or no pass—when appropriate

The four-day example is a planning exercise, not a price quote or guaranteed timetable. Removing the final return to Vienna leaves three major rail dates; compare the smallest available pass with ordinary tickets instead of inventing a three-day Global option. Adding excursions may justify a larger Flexi Pass, but only count trips you actually want. A Continuous Pass deserves a separate comparison when you expect to use covered trains on most dates. Price the exact option offered for your residence, age and travel dates.

Before payment and before boarding

Keep reservation confirmations separate from the pass and recheck the operating timetable close to departure. For a mobile pass, adding a journey to a saved itinerary is not the same as adding it to the pass for travel. Follow the current Rail Planner activation instructions and make sure the required ticket is available before boarding.
